Beholding the Lord Vs. Beholding Money

December 30th, 2007

Its a wee early for implementing a New Years resolution, but its never too early to start doing some of the things I’d like to do. One of the reasons that I moved from Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) in 2004 and relocated my family to Denver was to go to a church here. It was a big move with some big implications. We left friends there in DFW but we hadn’t found a church we felt comfortable calling ‘home’ and after giving up (we were notably picky and have since learned to mellow out… but that’s another story) we looked at a few places to move and finally picked Denver. At our church we have learned a major amount of things about our relationship with Christ. One of the passages that has rocked my world since moving here is Second Corinthians 3:18:

And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into His likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. [New American Standard]

This passage describes a relationship with Christ that is intimate and unencumbered with the normal distractions of life, but instead lends itself to the illustration of a bride and groom looking at one another, gazing with nothing between them. I recall standing on the stage in our wedding ceremony and looking at my wife-to-be and thinking, “I’ve never seen anything more beautiful – I must continue to behold her, to gaze at her and enjoy her beauty.” If anything had come between us I would have known it! Money can be one of those things that draws your gaze away from beholding. It can act like a hand that sticks out between you and the Lord and blocks your gaze. If money becomes one of those elements then its time to move on. It is time to get rid of the distraction that has interfered with the beholding of the Lord.

The consequences of beholding the Lord is that money and wealth get their proper place in life. You don’t find them to be worth beholding because they don’t hold a candle to the glory of the Lord! The consequences of beholding the Lord also include our spiritual growth. As we meditate on God’s glory (the emanating character of Christ) this passage tells us that we’ll be transformed into His likeness. Money can barely transform us into anything, and at best plastic surgery is temporary… but beholding has eternal benefits – I like that.

Keep Track Of Your Vehicle Data Online

December 30th, 2007

There’s a handy, free utility MyMileMarker.com that allows you to sign up your vehicle and keep track of mileage, gas and oil change stuff.

Free – as in not paying for it. I like those kinds of services. Plus you can use Twitter or a mobile device to do it! One of the reasons you’ll want to consider doing this (and I’m speaking to myself, too), is that it will allow you to track your own data, but also it can help you prove effectiveness of the vehicles efficiency when you sell it.

Goals for 2008

December 29th, 2007

As was done by GLBLGuy on the Gather Little By Little blog, I’m going to post some of my blog and financial goals for 2008.  These goals are pretty important since they define a vision, and should help set the course for the year.  Of course the thing with courses is that they often grow obstacles or mountain ranges.  The upside is that the 2008 year will have some great views from those mountain tops.

  1. Pay off all of my debts – this is a high goal since our projections to do so looked like they would take 18 months.  Doing it in 12 would be quite a leap ahead of schedule.
  2. Blog 3 posts a week on this blog.
  3. Establish a path for long term financial goals, and blog that path.
  4. Record a podcast or two a week.
  5. Establish a better relationship with other personal finance bloggers.  Its easy to stay focused on this blog – but as a community we have to work together to better the financial knowledge of our readers – and people who aren’t normally our readers.
  6.  Put together a focused series each month on a topic of interest.
  7. Figure out how to save $100.00 or more each month on different things to help increase the value of my dollar.
  8. Have a guest post every month from at least one different blogger.
  9. Contribute at least one ‘how to’ tutorial with pictures describing some financially beneficial activity.
  10. Post a theologically oriented post on Sundays.

What things on this list would you like to see most?  Is something missing on this post?  What goals do you have for 2008?

Finding Your Ultimate Money Maker

December 28th, 2007

The second in a series on “The Ultimate Money Maker” that covers the following:

  1. Look for something you like doing that you can make money doing in a way no one has made money on it before.
  2. If you find something that others are doing, what can you do differently?
  3. Do you have a plan? If not, why? Make one!
  4. Find a mentor.
  5. Get networking already!

The file is around 6 minutes long and weighs in at 8MB in size. You will need iTunes or Quicktime to listen.

The Ultimate Money Maker

December 27th, 2007

Part one of what will probably be a multi-part series on The Ultimate Money Maker. This is probably a mythical concept for the average person if they are looking for someone else’s ideas. The Ultimate Money Maker is about 3 megabytes.

What do you believe about this topic?

Witch Hunt!

December 27th, 2007

Today I went on a witch hunt. A hunt to find electricity sucking things plugged into my wall outlets that were drawing current for no good reason. The hunt wasn’t hard and I didn’t burn anything but some calories – which is probably one of the worst forms of exercise, second only to television. But I went through each room of the house and evaluated the things plugged into the wall sockets to make sure that they made sense and weren’t just killing my electric bill one hour at a time.

Things to consider include:

  • Does it plug into something that gets used?
  • Could it be plugged in and unplugged quite easily?
  • Could it be put on a power switch to turn off a group of devices at once to save energy when they’re not in use?
  • Could the number of plugs in the outlet create a fire hazard?

These little vampires of electrical energy are probably around your house. I found two things that were drawing current – how about you?

Taxes, They are A-Coming

December 26th, 2007

I’ve got quarterly taxes due soon.  Turns out that I need to have saved a bit more than I did, but we’ll have our stuff taken care of by April 15th and our future withholding (I’m self employed, so the withholding is self-inflicted).  Since getting my finances in order earlier this year I’ve learned a lot about where my taxes should be.  However, we’re recovering from earlier mistakes in the year and so more taxes are due.

What things do you do to help manage your taxes?

Do you have an accountant who helps you maximize tax savings?

What strategy do you take for yearly or quarterly tax payment?

Do you take deductions if you’re not self-employed?

Merry Christmas!

December 24th, 2007

Merry Christmas to my readers!  I hope you have a blessed day and enjoy it for much more than the stuff that marketers and such want you to find in it.  May you find peace & hope in the Christ!

Siphon

December 20th, 2007

I’m a whiner.  Here’s a goofy poem from my trip to the doctor this morning.

For symptoms I went to the doctor
Looking to get some help
What I told her just shocked her
Or that’s what I’m telling myself

She gave me a script for some ointment
Something to deal with signs
I’ll have to make another appointment
If my skin blisters or whines

Each trip to the doc is covered
A thirty dollar co-pay
“Happy Holidays,” she muttered
As I sadly shuffled away

Give me a diagnosis for the problem
Don’t just hand me a fix
I don’t want to mask yet a symptom
So that figures I’ve paid number six
